Theatre Bay Area Welcomes Dana Harrison
as new Managing Director

Former financial services executive succeeds
15-year veteran Cara Chrisman

SAN FRANCISCO, December 19, 2011undefinedTheatre Bay Area, one of the country’s largest regional arts service organizations and the Bay Area’s support organization for theatre and dance artists and companies, is pleased to welcome Dana Harrison as its new managing director. Harrison, a former executive at Charles Schwab and Bank of America, brings 30 years of experience building and managing large-scale operations to Theatre Bay Area, and will oversee a multiyear expansion of programming for theatre and dance artists, companies and patrons in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Harrison succeeds Cara Chrisman, a 15-year veteran of the organization who rose from a ticketing services staff member to become deputy director of Theatre Bay Area, and whose careful accounting has helped Theatre Bay Area flourish during the economic downturn. Harrison will pick up where Chrisman left off, using her extensive business background in finance, accounting, technology and strategic planning to assist executive director Brad Erickson and Theatre Bay Area’s staff to maintain and expand the organization’s ticketing, mentorship, research and journalism programs.

Introducing (well, actually, for those of us in Bay Area arts education, it's more like "re-introducing")  New Director of San Francisco Cultural Affairs -- Tom DeCaigny!

On Monday, December 5, the Arts Commission voted unanimously to appoint Tom DeCaigny as the agency's new Director of Cultural Affairs.

DeCaigny, 35, is a familiar leader in the arts education community.  He is currently the founder and head of Canopy Consulting, a national firm that advises nonprofit arts groups, corporate grant-makers and government agencies.

But most of us know him through his nine years as executive director the Performing Arts Workshop, now headed by TAO executive committee member Jessica Mele.  His appointment to SF office of cultural affairs concludes a four-month search for a leader as the $10 million agency tries to recover from a period of rocky management.

Predecessor Luis Cancel was forced out this summer after his bosses learned he was telecommuting from Brazil. During his tenure, the agency suffered low morale and improper accounting, including questionable granting practices, as a city audit in November revealed.

After five months, Interim Director JD Beltran will step down to return to her life as a full-time artist and professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. During her tenure, JD poured her heart as well as countless hours into restoring this agency to good health. While we will miss her dearly, her presence will be felt as we usher in a new positive chapter in the Arts Commission's history. Thank you, JD! And....welcome back, Tom!

SF ARTS COMMISSION TAPS ONE OF ITS OWN TO SERVE AS INTERIM DIRECTOR

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Arts Commission voted unanimously today to appoint its vice president, JD Beltran, as interim director while the commission recruits a permanent new director of cultural affairs (see story below for the departure of Luis Cancel from SF).

"JD is a fantastic artist, a well respected member of the arts community, and a committed public servant dedicated to the well-being of this organization," said SFAC President PJ Johnston. "We're very fortunate that she's willing to step in and serve for this brief period."

The SFAC will work with the Department of Human Resources to conduct a search for the permanent position. Johnston said he anticipated that process would take two to three months.

Beltran is a conceptual artist, filmmaker and writer. Her work has been screened and exhibited internationally. She writes columns on art and culture for both SFGate.com and the Huffington Post, and is a member of the San Francisco Writers' Grotto. Beltran is also on the faculty of the San Francisco Art Institute, where she is Director of the school's City Studio arts education program for under-served youth.

"I see my role as one of placeholder, helping the Arts Commission get through this transition to its new director," Beltran said. "I have no interest in the permanent job - indeed, I'll need to get back to my work soon. But I do care deeply about the San Francisco Arts Commission, and I want to see it flourish."

Beltran stepped down from the commission today. She said she hopes to return to the commission as soon as the new director is selected.  Mayor Edwin Lee has sole authority over the appointment of Arts Commissioners. The commission has authority over the appointment of the director of cultural affairs.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee Announces Departure on July 8th of Cultural Affairs Director Luis Cancel

In a note to friends and colleagues, Luis Cancel said that the Mayor had accepted his resignation effective July 8th, and that he was returning to his home city of New York, with his wife Regina Miranda, after serving as Director of Cultural Affairs and head of the SF Arts Commission for the past three and a half years.

Cancel writes:

"It has been an honor and pleasure to serve the administrations of two Mayors, who equally appreciate how the arts in San Francisco are core assets in defining the City as a cultural destination. Today, the Arts Commission moved into expanded office space that will allow the agency to welcome its 80th Anniversary Year in 2012 with better facilities to serve the residents of San Francisco. It's time for my family and I to return to my native city, and I want to thank my colleagues and the citizens of San Francisco for the privilege of having the best job in government."

An interim director will be appointed by the Mayor as a national search is conducted for Cancel's replacement.
