May 19 & 20th, 2012

The Tamalpa Experience introduces an approach that enlivens dialogue between body and imagination, life experiences and art making. Using movement, drawing, poetic writing, and improvisational performance, participants will tap into art's symbolic language to explore current life themes and generate new resources.

These 2-day intensive workshops are offered twice a year and are designed to give participants an experiential understanding of Tamalpa's work in movement-based healing arts. Recommended as an introduction to our training programs.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP

This intensive workshop introduces participants to the amazing array of possibilities provided by Adobe Photoshop.

Participants in this useful workshop will learn how to navigate Photoshop's interface and become familiar with its wide array of tools and techniques. The class will also focus on how to make skillful selections and adjust contrast and color. Learn the art of retouching, masking, resolution issues, and how to use layers for collage and photo-composition. Suitable for both commercial and fine artists.

Students are asked to bring images up to 8x10" in size for scanning (photographs, drawings, 35mm slides, transparencies). Your "Photoshopped" image will be output as a high-resolution inkjet print. Bring a blank CD or USB drive to take your image home. Enrollment is limited to 7 students. Basic computer experience is strongly recommended.

David Harding is Art Director for Advertising at a San Francisco poster publishing company that uses Photoshop intensively. David received his BFA in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1991, he won a Jerome Foundation Fellowship at Kala, and has also been a visiting artist in Dundee, Scotland. His work is exhibited at the Triton Museum of Art, the Mendocino Art Center, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.

DanceAbility cultivates a common ground for creative expression of all people.

The material is drawn from the group present in a given situation and isolates no one. The method supports self-empowerment by offering ways that all individuals can participate fully in expressing their creative choices, including respecting one’s own limits. Following one’s own interest and desire, and applying that to the benefit of one’s community, is a basic DanceAbility teaching.

The Workshop Includes:

foundation exercises introducing basic concepts of movement improvisation to people of all abilities based on things that all participants can do
introduction to the unique language of each person’s body
how to communicate non-verbally with a partner
how to communicate non-verbally in larger groups

KQED & East Bay Center for Performing Arts Summer Institute: Dance & Music Traditions and Integration of Contemporary Arts (11 Jun 2012)

Join teaching artists and educators from the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts and KQED's Arts Education program for a 3-day intensive workshop about dance and music traditions, and learn how to integrate the study of contemporary art into language arts, social studies, and arts classrooms.

Participants will work with professional artists, engage with KQED media about local artists, and develop integrated lesson plans for use in their classrooms.

This institute is free and open to K-12 teachers working in the Bay Area. Course credit or a $200 stipend is available for teachers who participate in follow-up and writing activities (1-2 hour commitment). The stipend opportunity is not required.

STC Students

A.C.T. was the first American theater to win a Tony Award for the quality of its training program as well as its performances. A.C.T. was also the first independent theater in the nation to win academic accreditation and the authority to grant a master of fine arts degree in acting. The Teaching With A Cultural Eye Institute is a two-day, nonresidential institute for new or experienced teachers, principals, and administrators interested in moving equity to the center of instructional practice.

The Institute addresses the increasing need for educators to develop the skills and awareness necessary to successfully interact with students and families from diverse backgrounds, and to integrate that awareness into their teaching and leadership practice.

Participants examine the ways that their own cultural identities influence their interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.

Topics include:

Cultural Competence Begins With Self-Reflection.Build cultural awareness through self-reflection of our collective experiences and identities (race, ethnicity, socio-economic, gender, sexual orientation, language).
Building a Learning Partnership. Learn strategies for building personal connections with all students to support deeper learning.

Sunprints with cyanotypes are one of the earliest experiences in photography, and Cyanotype photograms often exude the simple elegance of these early endeavors. This one-day workshop will cover all of the basics of how to create a cyanotype, and how to work with photograms and creating images with blocking techniques. No prior experience required. Enrollment limited to 10 students.

Mary K. Shisler has taught at Ohlone SF Photo Center and Kala Art Institute. Her work has been shown and collected internationally. She is known for her work with alternative processes and plastic cameras. Shisler is an Artist-in-residence at Kala.

This is a week of “field trips” visiting bay area art museum collectionsand education departments and as well as learning about classroom resourcesthey offer teachers. We will visit and meet with the education departments atthe de Young Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum,Museum of African Diaspora, Oakland Museum of California and the Asian ArtMuseum, get a tour of their collections and hear first hand how their educationprograms support your art integration teaching and learning in your classrooms.

Along with museum visits, we will explore resources that you canbring into your classroom, as well as opportunities to bring students to themuseums. You will receive curriculum materials and have the opportunity todevelop an action plan for using these resources throughout the school year.

Advanced Summer Institute 2012 – all year beginning 7/25-26

Deadline for application is April 16th for dance teaching artists and April 23rd for other educators.

Dance teaching artists are too often isolated in their teaching settings. Whether as the only “dance specialist” at a school site or bouncing between multiple school sites in a single day or week, dance teaching artists often feel an absence of professional support. Unsure how to access a sense of a larger community of colleagues and unable to feel comfortable as representative experts of their discipline within their teaching settings, too often dance artists feel burned-out, uninspired, or even driven to leave the profession entirely.

Luna’s Summer Institutes (SI) were created to support dance teaching artists to develop their craft. Learning in a collegial group of diverse educators, SI participants improve teaching practice, gain confidence as professionals and develop long-lasting systems of support.

Each year 6 dancers and 6 education practitioners (classroom teachers, social workers, ECE professionals, PE or music specialists) come together for 6 days of intensive study in the dance discipline. There they explore:
-the elements of dance
-creating & implementing standards-based dance lessons
-human development zero to 24 years
-learning theories, in particular critical pedagogy and constructivism
-observation skills…and more

SI participants then receive follow-up services including coaching & consultation, opportunities for advanced study and collegial exchange for the entire Academic Year. To date, Luna’s SIs have been funded by the NEA, Clif Bar Family Foundation and Clarence E. Heller Charitable Trust so there is no fee for participation (though employers are asked to make a small contribution toward follow-up where possible.)
